In one of the most horrifying terrorist attacks in recent galactic history, the formerly prosperous world of Dor-Nameth has been rendered uninhabitable. Casualties in the event itself are measured in the hundreds of millions, with many assuming that more than a billion in total will die before evacuation can be concluded.
Dor-Nameth had long been a world of minor importance. Fairly urbanized but unremarkable, it was a jump away from the Bright Jewel star and hence was a secondary world as compared to Ord Mantell. For the last five months, a shipyard had been in operation in orbit, both constructing and maintaining ships for Warlord Zsinj's navy. Significantly, the shipyard was used for the maintenance and retrofitting of Imperial-class Star Destroyers.
Yesterday, that history came to an end. An unknown group invaded the space station and set it and its ships on a collision course with the planet itself, at full acceleration. A Star Destroyer which had been berthed at the station had its reactor core rigged to detonate within the atmosphere, unleashing the enormous ship's full lifetime energy output in a single blistering instant.
Although some of the cities on the surface had shield systems and managed to get them online in time, the wave of devastation destroyed countless outlying settlements, as well as a pair of large urban centers that simply didn't have the time to power up their shields. All simulations carried out since the destruction confirm that enough soot and ash was created by the destruction and the wildfires that followed that Dor-Nameth is now destined for a centuries-long ice age. Long-term breathing of the planet's atmosphere without a mask has been rendered hazardous due to those same floating particles.
Warlord Zsinj has been outspoken in pointing to the Empire as the ones responsible, claiming that this terrorist attack, coming so soon after the imperial invasion of the planet of Listehol, were a clear pincer maneuver to invade his territory. The war between the two factions is warming up, with skirmishes and minor space battles becoming frequent all across their borders.
